Geek is Sexy*

By and large, I mirror my roomate's reaction to this Slashdot article declaring that (According to the New York Daily News), yes, geeks make better lovers: Yessss!

This is a thing we've known for eons... Geek-Oriented sites such as Everything and Geek-to-Geek have been kind enough to explain why... It's about time the word got out to the rest of the world...

Okay, get that Everquest/Elven Sex reference out of your head... Now!

Now that you have, not all of us have *that* kind of imagination. A lot of us are involved in writing, music, art, dance and comedy... Some of us help run simulation governments, whether we simulate a government in our own Backyard or simulate a nation of our own creation...

Heck...even the engineering/coding types find imaginative ways to solve problems...

(Tongue-in-cheek) And, hey... while some of our peers have been out and fumbling through sex in High School and College, many of us have been reading about it, thinking about it, and awaiting the day we can practice...

After all, didn't Lewis say in Revenge of the Nerds, "Jocks only think about sports, nerds only think about sex"? (/tongue-in cheek)

Of course, there are those nerds who obviously neglect our hygiene (all of us in Quiz Bowl know quite a few of those in the "unwashed masses") or are content to live in our parent's basement until they're 40. We're *all* wary of those types of people -- Geek, or non-geek... and this article does not extol that kind of lack of virtue...

I have a few points of contention with the article, though...

~ Unfortunately, the article seems to focus on the guys -- no mention of us geekettes.

~ They're stretching it when they cite Tiger Woods as an example of a geek. I guess it's due to golfing stereotypes, but really...How many of us refer to, say, Greg Norman as a geek?

~ I can see some people complaining about the article, yet again, referring to Geeks as providers. The article attempts to counter this notion near the end (though I wonder how effective this attempt is):

Koppel, however, warns that unserious girls who prowl his site [Geek-to-Geek.com] looking for a breadwinner should use caution - his members may be geeky, but they sure aren't stupid. "I think geeks are intelligent enough to be wary of the idea that an attractive woman is interested in them," he said. "They aren't as drawn to beauty as they are to intelligence, and wouldn't just accept a ditz."

It's true, intellegence in others is one of the things we value most... but what is "attractive", physically to us is *always* in the eye of the beholder, just like it is with the rest of the world...
